Our names are Jacob and Kathryn Otterman and we were born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. Before getting married, we began praying for what we were being called to as newlyweds. As we listened, the Lord continually put people and missions on each of our hearts.
We will be moving to Cyangugu (Kamembe), Rwanda, for at least two years. Our hearts are for the people, so our goal is to be with the people, day in and day out, earning the right to be heard, in order to share the Gospel and our lives with them.
We will be volunteering our time teaching English at Jill Barham, a local high school. This gives us the opportunity to get to know the kids, so we can share our sweet Jesus with them. We want to open our home for fellowship, worship, bible studies, encouragement, and to invite them into the full glory and grace the Father has for each and every one of their lives. Jill Barham is a hospitality management school and is similar to a boarding school, so students pay to attend and live there for nine months out of the year. Many kids cannot afford to pay tuition, which leaves the school struggling financially. We hope to create a program that attracts tourists to the school and gives the students hands on experience within the hospitality industry, while providing financial stability for the school allowing all students to attend.
Kathryn will also be volunteering with a nonprofit organization called Hands Producing Hope. Their mission is to provide the economic, educational, and spiritual resources necessary to empower remote communities to rise above poverty. In Rwanda, on Nkombo Island, HPH trains women to weave baskets, in order for them to earn an above-fair wage, to provide for their families. The women also attend a literacy class, where they learn how to read and write for the very first time. HPH also hosts life-skills classes for the women and their families to learn about finances, savings, nutrition, and prenatal care.
Jake will also be helping in the church, leading worship in the English service, and getting plugged in with the men in the area.
We will be serving and loving His kingdom, in Rwanda, for at least two years. All funds raised will support our ministry opportunities and day to day needs. We will be volunteering our time, so we are fully responsible to fundraise ALL expenses, life and ministry, for two years. We cannot go to Rwanda until we have raised all start up costs and have pledges for our annual expenses. It’s safe to say, we cannot do this without help. We are praying for people who believe in God’s calling for our lives, who will support us in prayer, who will love us relentlessly, bring us to His truth, and have His heart of giving abundantly.
In the Bible, God calls and equips His people for His work. God sent Abraham to the land of Canaan and Joseph to Egypt. He sent Moses to rescue His people, John to announce the coming of the Messiah, and then He sent His Son to die for us. Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (John 20:21). Through continual prayer and discernment, Rwanda was specifically placed directly into our hands, time and time again. God was been equipping for this calling throughout every season of our lives.
